First Lady Summer Style

First Lady Michelle Obama looked vibrant and sunny in an abstract print maxi skirt by SUNO (her fourth time wearing the brand!) during a family vacation in Martha’s Vineyard over the weekend. SUNO’s Spring/Summer Pleated Maxi Skirt in Beach Geo print originally retailed for $805, but is now on sale for $402.50 at www.sunony.com.

Bella!

Although I fully appreciate the aesthetic effort of Elizabeth and James clothing, I always dismiss it as a line that in no way speaks to my personal style. It's always a little too androgynous and a bit too misshapen, and well, always much too overpriced.

But this sweet spring skirt is bursting with retro femininity (something out of The Sound of Music, perhaps?) that I wouldn't normally expect from E&J.

I dig it.

Dear Fabulous File...

I am attending my parents's surprise 30th wedding anniversary party and have no idea what to wear. It’s at a winery and the venue and event are moderately casual. I would love to wear something that impresses family and friends, but my personal style is pretty conservative (i.e. classic pieces in safe colors like black, tan and white.)

The stickler is that I have a build like J.Lo: small on top and bigger on the bottom, not to mention my 'soccer legs.' Plus, here in Seattle, the climate is post-winter, early spring, so I want to look somewhat seasonal-appropriate, even if the weather isn't reflective of the change of seasons (yet.)

Basically, I'd love a stylish outfit that is post-work, pre-evening that is fitting for this in-between-season time of year, that also works for my body type. Please help!

-Mary

Dear Mary,

Wow, that's quite a conundrum, but never fear, I am here to help!

Here are some tips for you:

-Skirts are really popular for spring, so I'd start with one that is flattering and cut in a full swing skirt and worn above the waist (most likely the smallest part of your body.)

-A great, bold belt will accentuate your frame and keep the eye where it should be and help create an overall more balanced silhouette.

-Funk up the look with strong jewelry, a killer (but very walkable) pair of heels (to elongate those legs) and top off with either a fantastic oversized blazer (so hot right now!) or a more relaxed, hip motorcycle one that hits at the hip (or just above.)

-If you do wear a dress, remember to ALWAYS steer towards visually interesting elements up top, to keep the eye gravitating towards your face and bringing attention to your your top half (arms, shoulders, decollete.)

-This applies for blouses and tops, too--ruffles, feminine details, sweetheart necklines, pintuck details are great on you. The idea is to add some interest and volume on top to balance the bottom.
Pair with a wider leg trouser jean or pant for a more balanced and streamlined shape.

Hope this helps!

I love this look because it's feminine and flirty, but has a slight nod to the 80s without overdoing it. Keep the rest of the look modern and fresh by wearing the skirt slightly higher on the waist, mixing in simple basics, eye-catching jewelry and hot heels of your own. Here are a few printed skirts from Urban Outfitters and Asos.com for some celebrity style inspiration:

For the Bold...

If you're not shy when it comes to skirt trends (and adding volume to your figure), take a look at Amy Claire's Modern Gallica Skirt.

Plenty of bustles, folds, tucks and gathers to keep everyone's eyes on you. I'd keep the rest of the outfit as simple and clean as possible.

Skirting the Issue

Being the skirt-lover that I am, I'm always on a quest for new, different ones to add to my stash that will mix and match well with the rest of my wardrobe. Topshop has a few interesting offerings right now.

Mini Me

Before we jump ahead to 2009, I have to reflect a bit: Which trends jumped out at you in 2008? Plaid? Fetish footwear? Hair braids?

For me, I embraced high-waisted skirts and belts like there was no tomorrow, and rediscovered my love for mini skirts of the bubble and tulip shape variety.

This cute mini from BCBG is on super sale online, and would serve me well way into the New Year! Cheers!

Halloween May Be Over...

...but that doesn't mean you can't still get your flapper style on!

I'd wear this swingy skirt out to dinner or to a work event without thinking twice.

Dear Fabulous File...

I have this denim skirt that is borderline matronly-looking. I think it could be cute for fall, but I'm not quite sure how to wear it. Can you help me pull a look together?

-Annie

Dear Annie,

Sure, a full dark denim skirt has plenty of potential this season! Here's what I would do...

1. Hike up the skirt up to right below your rib cage, so that it transforms from dowdy denim to a trendy high-waisted skirt. (Bonus: the waistband will instantly flatter your frame since it's visually hitting you at your smallest point.)

2. Nix the boring, tie belt and swap it for a fun, eye-catching one in a pretty color. A wider belt will instantly slim your midsection, and add extra omph to a full skirt.

3. Add in a polished blouse with an edgy print or interesting detail to bring the interest UP and away from the fullness of the skirt.

4. If it's chilly out, layer on a body-grazing open cardigan to streamline the silhouette entirely.

5. Lastly, if you're feeling adventurous, pull on some patterned tights (the smaller the pattern, the more flattering it will be) and tie on some fierce platforms to elongate those legs.

Cutest. Jumper. Ever.

How Much Do I Love This Skirt...!!!

Granted, the fact that it's named "Teen Vogue Skirt" adds to its sweet-and-sassy appeal.

Oh Betsey, you're just brilliant.

Tulip Skirt

Running out the door to a fashion party in West Hollywood right now--but just wanted to post a quick rave about my new fave skirt from American Apparel.

No surprise that it just so happens to be cut in my beloved tulip shape; but the sporty elastic waist makes it easy to dress up (with a fun blouse tucked inside, cinched with a wide belt), or dress down (casual T or tank, long necklace and flats). Comes in a multitude of fun colors for those looking to break from the basic black.

It's simple, chic and affordable.

Oh, and, fittingly, quite fabulous.
